Relational Approach

01 – Behaviour is communication – It is not possible to support a child’s behaviour without understanding the underlying emotional need it expresses — whether conscious or not.

02 – Fair means equity, not equality – Every child needs a personalised response. Being consistent means acting in line with our values — not treating every child identically.

03 – Curiosity over judgement – We encourage all adults to focus on the feelings and vulnerabilities that might drive behaviour, rather than the behaviour itself.

04 – Relationships come first – Our school ethos promotes connection, inclusion, respect, and belonging for every member of the community — staff, pupils, and families alike.

05 – Structure and nurture together – Children need predictable routines and clear expectations alongside warmth and care. High nurture and high structure are not opposites.

06 – Natural consequences, not shame – Responses to behaviour should ensure all children feel safe and that all needs are met — without ostracising children from peers or family.

07 – Systemic thinking – Behaviour must always be viewed within the context of important relationships. External control alone cannot change behaviour driven by unmet needs.

08 – Every child wants to belong – Child-centred approaches — where children’s voices are heard and strengths are built upon — are integral to their success.

09 – Families are essential partners – Parental engagement is crucial when addressing and planning support. The parent-child connection is the most powerful intervention of all.
